Black Tie and Boots 2011 was loads of fun! The sold
out event, held in Placerville Friday night honored
Mark Smith, considered by some the grandfather of
4 wheeling, for his contribution to the sport. In a “salty”
and vastly entertaining speech Mark reminded us that
support of the foundation is important and constant
vigilance is necessary to fight opposition groups and
government agencies who seek to close the Rubicon
Trail to motorized access. He suggested in his speech
everyone consider remembering the Foundation in
their estate planning.

The entertainment of the evening was a live auction.
Spirited bidding caused lots of laughter and the
auctioneer, El Dorado County Supervisor Jack Sweeney
kept things lively. Lori Warden, chair of the auction
committee, expressed appreciation to the many
businesses and friends who sponsored or donated
auction items.

This type of event is not possible without a number of
volunteers. Special thanks to Chris Cowan, Jenelle
Nulika and Lacey Spiller for all of the work they put
into making the event successful. Thanks to Daphne
Green, Phil Jenkins and Jeff Gaffney of the California
Office of Off Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation for
attending the event.

This is the 3rd annual Black Tie and Boots, check back
here for info on the 4th annual Black Tie & Boots date.
Rememberto reserve your seats early this event has
sold out the last two years.

Ham Radio Classes

Rubicon trail Foundation has been sponsoring and presenting Ham Radio Technician classes since 2008, with
emphasis on using HAM Radio in conjunction with OHV. In that time, we have licensed almost 300 new radio
amateurs!

Typically, this is a two day class, held on Saturdays on successive weekends. During the first class,
Barbara Arenz (N6BOA) teaches in the classroom. She concentrates on getting the students “over the hump”,
working with them to get past understanding the technical information, organizing the information, giving
them study tips, and teaching them how to pass the test. Two weeks later in the second session, the amazing
FOTR/RTF “Volunteer Examiner” (VE) Team comes to the class in the morning and administers the test.

While the test is being graded and paperwork for license application is being completed, John Arenz (N6YBH)
teaches radio programming and practical application, as well as emergency procedures, helicopter training, etc.

We have found this to be a very successful combination, and are extremely proud of the work (and play)
our licensed amateurs have accomplished. Since the classes have started, several individual students have
orchestrated successful medical helicopter rescues in the Rubicon. Great stuff!

For more information about Ham Radios, frequencies and much more, go to our Ham Radio page.

If you are interested in attending a class, email John.Arenz@RubiconTrailFoundation.org
